Lilo C. Karsten’s practice is rooted in an exploration of transitions, traces and open pictorial spaces. Drawing from overlooked objects, memories and inner states, she develops visual structures that oscillate between drawing and painting, figuration and abstraction. Working with egg tempera, frottage using leaves and branches, and layered material processes, she creates fragile spaces in which forms emerge, condense and dissolve again. Boundaries appear not as fixed limits, but as shifting zones of transformation and permeability.
Born in 1956 in Wermsdorf, Saxony, Karsten studied at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle/Saale. Since the late 1970s, she has exhibited internationally. Her works are held in collections including the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the Bavarian State Painting Collections and the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden. She lives and works in Berlin.
